Diamond Engagement Rings: The Popular Princess Cut

A modern diamond cut that has been gaining a lot of popularity recently is the Princess Cut. Supposedly introduced in 1960, the Princess Cut features a rectangular shape and is considered the runner up to the Round Brilliant cut. Diamond consumers favor the Princess Cut because the qualities of this particular cut feature better color, clarity and cut quality. For all your diamond experts out there, I’m sure you already know what I’m talking about, but for those of you who are new to the diamond market, color, clarity and cut quality are essential to a great diamond, and more importantly  great diamond engagement rings.

The color of a quality diamond should transmit visible light and appear as colorless. The clarity of the diamond should be blemish-free and internally perfect. When diamonds are graded, they are magnified 10x to evaluate clarity. Diamond experts say that when it comes to the cut of a Princess cut, it’s a bit trickier to evaluate to the naked eye and ordinary person. However, many women and expectation men waiting to propose are beginning to prefer the Princess Cut because of its distinct and sharp rectangular shape. When paired with platinum or white gold and a diamond studded band, a diamond engagement ring featuring a Princess Cut will be sure to please.

Diamond Engagement Rings and Bachelorettes

I’m still a fairly young woman, years away from marriage. But it doesn’t mean I don’t love looking at diamond engagement rings from time to time. I guess you could say that it’s the same as men looking at expensive sport cars. Looking at engagement rings is a guilty pleasure of sorts—like watching a cheesy romantic comedy film that makes you gush feelings of happiness anyway.

My good friend Diana and I have a little tradition that happens maybe once (or twice) a month where we go online and just look at various engagement rings—our notable favorites are white gold diamond engagement rings. We can literally spend hours at jewelry store online sites. We’ll chat about how our jobs are going, our mutual friends, great restaurants we’ve been to recently, good books we’ve read, and of course, buying diamonds online from reputable jewelers. We even sometimes visit the diamond district NY to see the latest styles, fashions and great deals. The most amazing part of it it? We do all of this without our boyfriends ever knowing. And sometimes, we even splurge and buy a diamond pendant or diamond earrings to put a slight halt on our diamond engagement ring itches.

Reputable Jewelers Know: Diamonds Are A Man’s Best Friend, Too

Reputable jewelers across the world are polishing the glass of their display cases, straightening their cravats and winking at the cameras. Their secret? Men’s diamond bands.

All the men in Hollywood get manicures. You know this, right? Manicures, and indeed pedicures, too. A manicure doesn’t have to mean pink or any other color polish, it just means luxurious grooming of your hands.

We all know that a firm handshake is essential to a good first impression. But if you examine the that moment of first impression, it’s clear that the effect is not achieved by the pressure of a firm grip alone. What are the other elements?

Well, the way reputable jewelers see it, you’ve got to have the whole picture in place, and a little bit extra, too.

1. Eye contact. Confident, friendly eye contact.

2. Smile. Even if it’s a high tension business introduction. A smile is the most disarming weapon in your arsenal.

3. Well-groomed hands. Trust us on this one, a manicurist knows how to make your hands look and feel fantastic in a way far beyond your wildest soap and nail-clippers imaginings.

4. Here’s where we get to the reputable jewelers‘ ace. Men’s diamond bands. Gentlemen! If you want to make the kind of impression usually limited to A-list actors, diamonds are your best friend, too.

Spangold, Green Gold, and Grey Gold

A few weeks ago on this blog we talked about White gold and its role in jewelry hottest new item, white gold diamond engagement rings. (View that post HERE). Then last week we talked about Rose, Red, and Pink “colored” Golds (View that post HERE). We’ve received such a positive response about these posts that we’re going to do a third post, this time discussing Spangold, Green Gold, and Grey Gold.

Spangold is a gold-copper-aluminum allow that typically has a fine surface texture during heating. A martensitic transformation occurs during cooling (regardless of the cooling rate). Once the piece is polished in hot oil over 150 degrees Celsius, then cooled under 20 degrees Celsius, it creates a sparkling exterior.

Green gold is also an alloy, a combination of gold and silver, excluding copper. Most experts would describe green gold as being a greenish-yellow tint, as opposed to a blatant green. When the alloy occurs naturally, it is called ‘electrum,’ a material discovered by the Lydians in 860 B.C.E.

To create a darker green alloy, cadmium is often added, although in small doses since this element is toxic. Typically if under five percent of the alloy is cadmium, te color will be a very dark green.

Grey Gold is an alloy that combines gold, silver, and copper with manganese, and is typically available in most jewelry store online.

Rose, Red, and Pink Gold

A few weeks ago on this blog we talked about White gold and its role in jewelry’s hottest new item, white gold diamond engagement rings. (View the previous post about white gold HERE). This week we’ll discuss other “unique” gold colors, such as rose, red, and pink gold.

These three colored gold’s – rose, red, and pink – are often names used interchangeably to define a gold and copper alloy combination. The addition of copper gives off a reddish color, which explains the names. Pure gold is yellow, while pure copper is red, so the more copper in the piece, the darker the coloration.

The difference between rose gold, red gold, and pink gold is the amount of copper present. Rose gold and pink gold are typically 75% gold and 25% copper. Red Gold is usually a 50-50 split between gold and copper.

Due to its popularity in Russia during the 19th century, the gold-and-copper alloy is often referred to as Russian Gold, a term that can be used for any and all of the different gold-color types.

While some are rarer than others, all of these multi-colored gold options are available for purchase on any jewelry store online, as well as in the shop of any reputable jewelers.

The Diamond District NYC!

Just one block south of famed Rockefeller Center in Manhattan is the Diamond District NY, one of the world’s largest shopping district for all sizes and shapes of diamonds and fine jewelry. The United States is the world’s largest consumer market for diamonds, and over 90% of the diamonds that enter America do so through New York City. With over 2,600 businesses and Diamond District Jewelers being directly related to fine jewelry, it is truly the best place to purchase a diamond while also receiving great value and fine industry expertise.

Located on West 47th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenue, the Diamond District is the Mecca of reputable jewelers. It was created in the early 1930s, but grew tremendously during the Nazi German invasion of Netherlands and Belgium, which forced hundreds of thousands of Jewish reputable jewelers to flee to New York City.

In 1997, the 47th Street Business Improvement District was formed by the merchants and land-owners of the district in order to form a not-for-profit tax exempt organization, though their official website claims that the goal of the district “is to make the Diamond district safer, cleaner and more beautiful for merchants and consumers who work and shop in the Diamond District.”

NBC’s Jane Hanson once reported that the value of a single day’s trade in the New York City Diamond District averages around $400 million.

Top 3 Jewel Idioms

The Polish Crown Jewels.

There are three excellent English phrases/idioms in English that use the word jewels. The first is “crown jewels.” This means prized possession, and transfers the value of royal jewelry to everyday objects that are of importance. To use it in a sentence: My wife’s fine china and porcelain collections are the crown jewels of our home.

The second, is “to be a jewel in the crown.” This refers to an item that is the best, or most successful part of another thing, in the way that a jewel adorns a crown, making it worthier. It differs from the above in that it is  typically used in a more abstract manner. Here’s an example of common usage: Rome was the jewel in the crown of the ancient world.

The third, and my personal favorite, is “family jewels.” This refers to the testicles, which are similarly important to a family, because they allow for the familial line to continue. In everyday usage: During a goalkick at the World Cup, all of the players line up and put their hands over their groins to protect the family jewels.

Jewel can also be used colloquially to describe something of importance, or something beautiful. To learn more about jewels like white gold diamond engagement rings, visit the diamond district NY. The diamond district NY is the jewel in the crown of the world’s diamond business.

Cleaning Your Diamond Rings

Day to day wear on your diamond ring can leave it in a rough state. Gunk and junk can build up and make your diamond look dull and faded. If you want to clean it well, there are a few options that you can try.

1.    Soak your diamonds engagement rings in a water and detergent solution.

2.      If this does not get the diamond sufficiently clean, take a soft bristle toothbrush and clean the ring. If the bristles are too hard, they can scratch the metal setting.

3.    Re-soak the ring in the water detergent solution and carefully rinse it in warm water. If you wash it in the sink, make sure that the drain is clogged – you don’t want to lose the ring down the sink!

4.    Dry the ring with a soft cloth.

If the diamonds engagement rings are still dirty, you can use a toothpick or a dental water pik to remove stray dirt. Fracture filled diamonds call for a detergent solution, but you can use ammonia and water for a diamond that is not fracture filled. If you go swimming during the summer, take off your rings – chlorine can damage diamonds.

Taking care of your white gold diamond engagement rings can keep them looking beautiful, so whenever you notice dirt building, follow these steps.
