Diamond District Jewelers, Reputable Jewelers, White Gold Diamond Engagement Rings and more…
A few weeks ago on this blog we talked about White gold and its role in jewelry hottest new item, white gold diamond engagement rings. (View that post HERE). Then last week we talked about Rose, Red, and Pink “colored” Golds (View that post HERE). We’ve received such a positive response about these posts that we’re going to do a third post, this time discussing Spangold, Green Gold, and Grey Gold.
Spangold is a gold-copper-aluminum allow that typically has a fine surface texture during heating. A martensitic transformation occurs during cooling (regardless of the cooling rate). Once the piece is polished in hot oil over 150 degrees Celsius, then cooled under 20 degrees Celsius, it creates a sparkling exterior.
Green gold is also an alloy, a combination of gold and silver, excluding copper. Most experts would describe green gold as being a greenish-yellow tint, as opposed to a blatant green. When the alloy occurs naturally, it is called ‘electrum,’ a material discovered by the Lydians in 860 B.C.E.
To create a darker green alloy, cadmium is often added, although in small doses since this element is toxic. Typically if under five percent of the alloy is cadmium, te color will be a very dark green.
Grey Gold is an alloy that combines gold, silver, and copper with manganese, and is typically available in most jewelry store online.
