Diamond District Jewelers, Reputable Jewelers, White Gold Diamond Engagement Rings and more…
The Diamond District of NY isn’t like most of the city’s neighborhoods. You probably wouldn’t even know when you walk through it. The Diamond District is located on West 47th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, one block south of Rockefeller Center, three blocks south of Radio City Music Hall, three blocks south of St Patrick’s Cathedral (along Fifth Avenue), and one block east of the Broadway Theater District.
The NY Diamond District formed when diamond dealers began flocking there from two other small districts in Chinatown and the Financial District, around 1941. World War II played a large part in the formation, as Orthodox Jews, after being run out of Antwerp and Amsterdam, fled to New York City, where many stayed even after the war ended.
Though diamond dealers are the primary residents of the District, for a long time (nearly 60 years), a bookshop called the Gotham Book Mart had residency on West 47th and was one of the few non-diamond dealers in the area.
The NY Diamond District is among the most prominent in the world. Other notable districts are in London, which deals with rough stones; the historical district in Antwerp, Belgium; the thriving district in Mumbai, India; and Johannesburg in South Africa.
