Who would have thought you could find a treasure of jewelry just laying around the streets of Manhattan? I’m not talking about those guys on the street corners selling cheap jewelry and watches. Raffi Stepanian of Queens says the streets are literally paved with gold here on 47th Street. With just a pair of tweezers and a butter knife in tote, Raffi sifts through the mud for tiny diamond, platinum, and ruby chips, gold earring backs, and loops from broken chains, bracelets, and watches.
“Material falls off clothes, on the bottom of shoes, it drops off jewelry, and it falls in the dirt and sticks to the gum on the street,” he explained. After sifting the mud through a basin (just like they did “back in the day”), he sold his treasure for $819 at a jeweler!
