Diamond District Jewelers, Reputable Jewelers, White Gold Diamond Engagement Rings and more…
There are numerous famous diamonds out there and today we’re going to talk about one that is close to home, in New York City that is. The Tiffany Yellow Diamond is actually one of the largest yellow diamonds ever discovered, weighing in at 287.42 carats, that’s 57.484 grams! It was discovered in 1878 in a South African mine. However, it lost a little weight after it was cut into a cushion shape –128.54 carats. It has 90 facets, which is 32 more than traditional round diamonds.
This impressive diamond was purchased by Charles Tiffany himself in 1879. It was Tiffany’s gemologist that actually cut down the diamond after spending a full year studying it. The diamond eventually made its way to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. and was on display until September 2007. It has since made it’s way back home where it is on display at the NYC store. It has only been worn twice by two women. First by Mrs. Sheldon Whitehouse at the Tiffany Ball in 1957 and later by Audrey Hepburn in 1961 in the movie…you guessed it…Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
