The Skinny on Fancy Color Diamonds

jewelry store onlineEveryone loves a beautiful white diamond, but I think we all love colored or fancy diamonds even more. It’s hard to compete with beautiful shades of blue, pink, and green. Like regular white diamonds, fancy diamonds also follow the four C’s, but they do things just a little differently. In terms of color grading, fancy diamonds are graded in two ways. The first has to do with the basic hue, such as blue, yellow, etc. The second part is the diamond’s intensity. The more intense the color, the rarer and more expensive the diamond –despite size and shape.

A secondary undertone will also increase the diamond’s worth, so long as it enhances and does not detract. Like with white diamonds, cut and shape are important, but a diamond cutter has to consider which angles and facets will bring out the most of the color, enhancing the diamond’s appearance. Unlike white diamonds, the clarity isn’t the most important factor. Fancy diamonds with a clarity of VS or better are most common and worth more.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that carat weight affects the price, but you should only compare fancy diamonds of similar characteristics to determine price.
