Diamond blemishes are not all the same. Some are a natural part of the gem, while other marks occur when the diamond is cut or while you are wearing it. Surface blemishes can affect both the clarity and value of the diamond depending how severe they are, but they usually do not affect the diamond’s appearance.
Scratches are fine surface lines that can be polished away. Nicks are where a portion of the diamond has been chipped away. If the nick is small enough it can be repaired by polishing to create an extra facet. However, if too many extra facets are created, it will not have a positive affect on the diamond’s value. Pits are holes in the diamond’s facet. Sometimes they are not noticeable, but a pit on the diamond’s table facet (the one on top) is usually more visible. It will also affect the clarity grade.
A natural is a portion of the diamond’s rough surface that has not been polished. Naturals are often left when the cutter wants a larger caret weight. It will not impact the clarity grade. A trigon is simply a natural that looks like a small triangle. Lastly, polishing lines are marks made during the polishing process. Their affect on the diamond depends on where they are.
